YDFDA 2018 Scholarship Application

For Students applying to a University of Alaska campus or any University of Alaska community college YDFDA STRONGLY ENCOURAGES those students to first apply directly with the University of Alaska Foundation.  The application is located on the web at: uaonline.alaska.edu and click on Scholarships, Grants, and Awards.  The UAA application is due FEBRUARY 14 for the upcoming fall and spring semesters.

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM:

The primary purpose of the program is to provide financial aid to both full-time & part-time undergraduate and graduate students from Alakanuk, Emmonak, Grayling, Kotlik, Mountain Village, and Nunam Iqua, who are enrolled and attending an accredited college or university that may be located either inside or outside the state of Alaska. These include any accredited post-secondary junior colleges and any institution that is accredited and offers a Bachelors Degree.  Also, courses provided by the Career Academy in Alaska may be considered for funding.

QUALIFICATIONS PERTAINING TO RECIPIENTS:

A. Recipient must be a resident of one of the six-member villages of YDFDA for at least five continuous years at any time prior to application.  These villages are Alakanuk, Emmonak, Grayling, Kotlik, Mountain Village, and Nunam Iqua.  Scholarships will be awarded subject to the availability of funds.

B. Recipient must be in good academic standing to continue to be eligible to receive his/her award.  Freshman students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for the first year, sophomore students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25, all other students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 until they graduate.  Graduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for the first semester and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 thereafter.

C. For vocational students, the recipient must be accepted into a vocational course that is a minimum of three (3) months full time in duration. The vocational training institute must provide assurances of the student’s satisfactory progress towards goals, completion of the course and certification.  Exceptions to the minimum duration period may be made for those courses that last four to six weeks in duration i.e. CDL training. 

D. Job Corps students are not eligible for YDFDA scholarships.

SIZE OF AWARD:

A.  Recipients are strongly encouraged to apply for other sources of school funding, as the YDFDA Scholarship is intended to supplement, not replace, other resources. Awards may include funds for tuition, books, fees, room, and board, living expenses, and travel expenses to and from one of the member villages and the institution attended by the student.  In the event that students request and receive airfare assistance, such amounts will be deducted from the size of their award.

B.  For a degree completion program, a full-time student (hereby defined as one taking at least twelve or more credits per semester) will receive up to $7,000 annually or $3,500 per semester. For part-time degree completion program (hereby defined as a student taking six credits to eleven credits per semester), a recipient will receive up to $3,700 annually or $1,850 per semester.  For students taking one class with a minimum credit award of at least three credits will be eligible to receive $875 per semester.  For vocational institutions, a recipient may receive up to $1,500 per quarter based on a twelve-month calendar year.

C. Recipients of scholarship awards must provide the previous semester’s grades and a budget forecast for the upcoming semester to be eligible to continue receiving the scholarship.  In the case of vocational schools, students must provide the previous quarter's grades or a report from the instructor as to the progress of the student and a budget forecast for the upcoming quarter to be eligible to continue receiving the scholarship.

D. The maximum cumulative award is set at $28,000 over a four-year time period.  For part-time students, the maximum cumulative award is set at $14,800 over a four-year period.

E. The YDFDA Scholarship Committee may, at their discretion, review requests for further scholarship funding beyond four years.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

A. Deadlines for the YDFDA Scholarship will be as follows: April 15 (summer semester), July 15 (fall semester), and December 15 (spring semester).

B. Deadline for the University of Alaska Foundation is February 14 for the upcoming fall and spring semester.

C. For vocational students, the application must be submitted two (2) months prior to attending the institution.

D. Applicants, who have received vocational training scholarships, can submit a letter of intent to continue their training, in another field, or program if they plan on continuing their training at the same training facility.

FORFEITURE OF AWARD:

A. A recipient selected for assistance in a forthcoming semester will forfeit the scholarship and be prohibited from receiving any future awards if he or she:

 1) Does not enroll in the semester in which the award is to be in effect;

 2) Is placed on academic probation; or

 3) Does not maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 as a freshman; or maintain a GPA of 2.25 as a sophomore, or maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 thereafter.  These forfeiture provisions will apply to graduate students that do not maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for the first semester and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 thereafter.

B.  In the event of forfeiture, the YDFDA scholarship committee may, in its sole discretion, provides a student with one semester of probation prior to forfeiture of present scholarship awards and prohibiting any future awards.  Failure to regain good standing status within the probation semester, if granted, will result in the suspension of the scholarship.

REINSTATEMENT:

A. To be considered for any future award in the event of forfeiture, the recipient must complete the number of credits for which s/he received the initial award with the minimum required cumulative GPA prior to the end of the second semester (or term) immediately following the semester (or term) of forfeiture.  This process may take no more than two consecutive semesters.

B. In the event that a recipient has not completed the required credits or fulfilled the minimum GPA requirement to maintain full scholarship status, the YDFDA Scholarship Committee, at its discretion, may award a scholarship based on the recipient’s effort and commitment to continue his/her education goal of completing a degree/certificate.

For students applying for University of Alaska Foundation scholarships, the application is located on the web at: uaonline.alaska.edu and click on Scholarships, Grants, and Awards. Students applying to a University of Alaska campus (UAA, UAF, UAS) or any University of Alaska community college (e.g. KuCC, PWSCC) are strongly urged to apply directly with the University of Alaska Foundation.    The application is due FEBRUARY 14 for the upcoming fall and spring semesters.

B. For students applying for YDFDA Scholarships, applications are available online at www.YDFDA.org, and can be obtained by calling 1-877-985-6625.  For vocational training, call 1-877-985-6625 for assistance.

C. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY EITHER YDFDA OR UAA.

CONTINGENCIES:

A. The YDFDA Scholarship Committee reserves the right to review extenuating circumstances on an individual basis and may, at their discretion, make exceptions to the policies for awarding scholarships. Solely the YDFDA Scholarship Committee will determine the final selection of any scholarship awarded.
